Milla Finds 3D In "Resident Evil: Afterlife"

Sneak Peek the new poster supporting the Toronto-lensed fantasy horror sequel "Resident Evil: Afterlife", based on the "Resident Evil" video game series.

"Resident Evil: Afterlife" from Sony's Screen Gems, will be released in 3D and 2D venues September 10.

Written/directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, the fourth movie installment stars Anderson's wife Milla Jovovich with Ali Larter, Spencer Locke, Wentworth Miller, Shawn Roberts, Boris Kodjoe, Kim Coates, Norman Yeung and Kasey Barnfield.

"...'Resident Evil: Afterlife' follows 'Alice' as she continues on her journey to find survivors and lead them to safety. When her deadly battle with the 'Umbrella Corporation' reaches new heights, Alice gets some unexpected help from an old friend. Sneak Peek "Scott Pilgrim vs The World"

Sneak Peek the new trailer supporting the Toronto-lensed comic book adaptation, "Scott Pilgrim vs The World", described as "...an epic of epic epicness..."

Ratner Presents "Kites: The Remix"- May 28

Reliance Big Pictures will release "Kites: The Remix", in Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary, May 28.

"...A supremely romantic tale of star-crossed lovers destined to be together but doomed to be apart, 'Kites' is Bollywood as you’ve never seen it before. Filmed almost entirely in English and Spanish, and completely set in America and Mexico, the film is far more international in appeal than most traditional Indian super-productions. Officially billed as "A Brett Ratner Presentation", Ratner’s version of "Kites", is a 'remix' of the original "Kites" feature, now running 90 minutes as opposed to the 130–minute original.

CBS Books More "Flashpoint" - June 4

CBS will launch the third season of the Toronto-lensed action cop series "Flashpoint", Friday, June 4, at 9 PM.

The show was created by Mark Ellis and Stephanie Morgenstern and stars Enrico Colantoni, Amy Jo Johnson, Hugh Dillon and David Paetkau.

"...'Flashpoint' follows an elite tactical unit, called the 'Strategic Response Unit' (SRU), styled after the Toronto Police Emergency Task Force (ETF). The SRU are tasked to resolve extreme situations that regular officers are not trained to handle including hostage-taking, bomb threats and heavily armed criminals. Equipped with high-tech tools and a cache of weapons and explosives, members use negotiation tactics and intuition to try to avoid the use of force..."

"Flashpoint" is currently being distributed by New York's Alchemy Television and Tele München Group to all international markets outside of North America. TV networks airing the series in more than 50 countries include Tv2 in New Zealand, ITV3 in the UK and stations in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Iceland, Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands and Latin America.

Film Movement Takes On "NURSE.FIGHTER.BOY"

"NURSE.FIGHTER.BOY", the 17th feature film produced through CFC Features, has been acquired by Film Movement for US distribution.

Black Walk Runs With "Medium Raw: Night Of The Wolf"

The Canadian feature "Medium Raw: Night Of The Wolf", from the same creative team behind the 2007 feature "Dark Rising", stars Canadian actor William B. Davis ("X-Files") John Rhys Davies ("Lord of the Rings"), Mercedes McNab ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer") and WWE stars Jay Reso/Andrew "Test" Martin.

"...Not just another action thriller, 'Medium Raw' is also the diary of a marriage, having sprung from the mind of writer/director Andrew Cymek in 2001 at the request of producer/star Brigitte Kingsley. Brigitte promised Andrew that if he wrote something, she would produce it. Flash forward a few years and the newlyweds have just spent their honeymoon money on the opening scenes of what will become 'Medium Raw'..."

"Where there is a will, there is a way and I am nothing if not persistent," said Kingsley, who not only starred in and produced "Medium Raw", but is now head of production at Black Walk.

Toronto's Stewart Joins Cannes 3D Speakers

James Stewart, producer/director @ Toronto-based Geneva Film Co. and a recognized pioneer in digital 3D, will be a guest speaker June 21, 2010 at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival, joining Jon Landau, producer of "Avatar", director Sir Ridley Scott, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, director Spike Jonze, Richard Pinder, COO of Publicis Worldwide, and Goodby Silverstein founder Jeff Goodby.

The select group of industry leaders were invited by Cannes Lions to deliver an in-depth keynote on 3D and its breakaway success as an entertainment/commercial medium.

Stewart will speak about 3D on behalf of the Screen Advertisers World Association (SAWA) in the seminar titled "The Cinematic Medium - Connecting Technology, the Audience and the Advertiser".

On Tuesday, June 22, 2010, Stewart will host the workshop "Are You Ready for the 3D Revolution?", offering "...a journey into the next dimension- From the history of the medium to today's 3D production methods, and the future impact of 3D on the modern creative process..."

Stewart's most recent 3D work, a PSA for Sprint launched May 21 with "Shrek Forever After".

Roberts Swears By "Jesus Henry Christ"

Oscar-winning actress Julia Roberts is executive producing the comedy feature "Jesus Henry Christ", currently prepping for a Toronto start June 5, shooting through to July 11.

Screenplay is by director Dennis Lee ("Fireflies In The Garden").

Actors cast include Michael Sheen ("Underworld: Rise Of The Lycans") and Toni Collette ("United States Of Tara").

In 2008, Roberts also executive produced the Toronto-lensed "Kit Kittredge: An American Girl", through her Red Om films banner.

Based on Lee's Academy Award-winning short film of the same name, "Jesus Henry Christ" follows 'Henry James Hermin', a boy conceived in a petri-dish and raised by a loving, left-wing feminist. At the age of 10, he decides his mother's love is not enough and begins to follow a trail of 'Post-It' notes stuck around town hoping it will lead him to his biological father.

Sukee Chew of Hopscotch Pictures will also produce.

Cineplex Sees A Future In 3D Cinemas

Cineplex Galaxy CEO Ellis Jacob reports that the 'growing popularity' of 3D movies has driven demand for more 'immersive' experiences at the company's chain of theatres.

In response, Canada's largest movie exhibitor is launching the "Ultra AVX audio-visual experience," with digital projectors, giant screens and high-tech sound systems.

The first expansion will start in Toronto, Calgary and British Columbia, with a goal of making 30 per cent of Cineplex screens capable of showing 3D movies by the end of 2010...

NFB Wins @ Cannes With "Crash! Bang! Wallow?"

The National Film Board of Canada (NFB) reports that the winner of the 6th NFB Online Short Film Contest @ Cannes, "Crash! Bang! Wallow?", was awarded to Jon Dunleavy and Keith Wilson-Singer of the UK.

This year, the 10 shortlisted films generated more than 2 million views in 14 days – on the NFB’s English and French YouTube channels. This sixth edition was organized by the NFB in collaboration with the Short Film Corner and in association with YouTube.

"...In partnering the contest, the NFB continues to encourage the creators of bold and innovative shorts..."

The public had 14 days to vote online for the best short film on the YouTube site, recording more than 20,000 votes internationally.

Winning short, "Crash! Bang! Wallow?", is an animated film that "...tells the tale of ex-Hollywood stuntman 'Larry LeTan' and his fight to find a place in the modern world..."

Filmmakers Dunleavy and Wilson-Singer will receive a digital HD video camera and laptop computer from the NFB.

Short films that came in second, third and fourth place are "Love and Theft" by Andreas Hykade (Germany), "The Technician" by Simon-Olivier Fecteau (Canada) and "The Story of My Life" by Pierre Ferrière (France).

"Splice": She's Not Human...Not Entirely

Sneak Peek the new poster supporting the Toronto-lensed sci fi horror feature "Splice".

Directed by Vincenzo Natali, "Splice" was picked up for distribution by Joel "Lethal Weapon" Silver and his Warners-based Dark Castle label, after the North American debut of the France-Canadian co-production @ the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, in the 'Park City At Midnight' program.

Filmed in Toronto at Black Creek Pioneer Village, Cinespace Film Studios and York University, "Splice" follows 'Elsa' and 'Clive', two young scientists, who defy legal and ethical boundaries, by splicing together human/animal DNA to create a hybrid chimera organism.

Named 'Dren', the creature develops from a deformed female into a beautiful winged creature, forging a bond with both creators.

Warners will release "Splice" June 4 on 3,000 screens, with marketing support, budgeted between $25-40 million.

Dark Castle is optimistic that the genetic mutation thriller will be the next box-office busting "Paranormal Activity".
